More decking timber.
Ok I know that this topic has been done to death but here goes .....
(yes I have done a search )
I have two small decking projects on the go at the moment. The lengh of timber required is small, only 1200mm for one deck and 1500mm for the other deck. My preference is for a red hardwood such as redgum or jarrah but it is very difficult to find. I am happy with new or recycled.
From scouting around the Geelong area it looks as if my options for decking will be the following:
Merbau (not really red but commonly available around here)
Yellow Balau (not really red but commonly available around here)
Massarra
I found some of this today at a good price but a Yahoo search comes up blank .... any ideas? This was the spelling I was given but it could be wrong.
Jarrah (if I can find it)
Bunnings had Jarrah for $2.88 but they are not stocking it any more and it has all gone
or
Redgum (again if I can find it).
I am interested in suggestions on which one will be best to go for, keeping in mind availability and price ..... oohh I might start a poll :eek:Now proudly sponsored by Binford Tools. Be sure to check out the Binford 6100 - available now at any good tool retailer.

You have 100% in favour of Merbau at the moment, I think that says it all....
If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

Try JVS timber in Hoppers Crossing for set length jarrah- if they can't or won't sell it to you they may be able to direct you to someone who can. Failing that, Blue gum is occaisionally available as decking- albeit pricey, and not as dark as it used to be- or you could go for mixed reds (also known as forest reds) if you don't mind a bit of variation in colour. Belmont timber, Barwon timber or Fagg's (I think the one in Geelong Sth is the one - Moorabool St??) will all be able to help you out. You could also see what VTW can do if your're really keen. Did I leave anyone out?
If Bunnings can't get Jarrah though, then there's probably none to be had. I'd go Mixed Reds myself; it's good value in flooring too cause people don't seem to want a floor if they can't tell their friends which species it is (usually bloodwood, red mahogany, blue gum and/or red ironbark).
Good luck;

G'day.
Red Ironbark or Turpentine.
Try Market Timbers In Melbourne.
They are in the book.
Hooroo.

Victorian Timber Wholesalers, I'm pretty sure they're Geelong based; dunno if you'd get any reds out of them, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

I voted Jarrah because thats what is mostly available in the west, especially recycled from timber roof frames. The older the better as the colours really come out. New jarrah can be boring and somewhat...well overwhelming.

I've voted for Jarrah although the last deck that I built was made of Merbau. The look of jarrah is superior but when it came down to cost I couldn't justify the extra expense.
Cheers,
Alex
PS Shiver Me Timbers in Williamstown sell Jarrah decking (bit pricey but very good quality).

jarrah decking
You might try Australian Recycled Timber ? Fabio Crt Campbellfield - they have both new and recycled jarrah - not sure about decking though. Plenty of T & G and other dimensions.

What about batu?
Oh, and my dad still lives in Melbourne - he got a heap of flooring from a place in Newport, though it might have been mentioned already.

I have a mix of Jarrah and Sheoak. Jarrah is on the inside...
