    Default Dressed or Roughsawn?

When buying Jarrah to make a hall table, do I want dressed all round or roughsawn kiln dried wood?

Any information on what the hell this is, is greatly appreciated

Do you have a planer / jointer - or access to one?
If you do, you can buy the roughsawn (it should be cheaper) and dress it yourself.

Otherwise you need to buy the dressed stuff, the timber yard have already run it thru their planer, and will charge you extra for that

    Cheers

I have access to a thicknesser and planer - as for a jointer

What does it mean by 'dressed' anyway?

    G'day there,

A simple way to explain would be this.
You know when you walk into bunnings and look at pine board (for shelving etc) and it is reasonably smooth on all 4 sides? This is considered "dressed all round DAR".
Now if you buy rough sawn timber, it would be just that - roughly sawn, so it would be reasonably flat, reasonably straight, but you would need to run it through a jointer - this would give you a couple of flat edges, then a thicknesser - this would dress the rest of the timber parallel to the original straight edge.
Thicknessers are great, but they will only follow the path of the straightest edge meaning if oneside has a bow etc, then it will happen on the other side as well.

Hope this helps - and I hope it is right!! Others can feel free to pick me apart and set the record straight if I have given a bum steer.
    Cheerio.
