Ebony for sale
Hi all,
I'm looking for a small quantity of ebony to make some Greene and Greene style square plugs. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I’m in Brisbane, but it’s such a small quantity I’m after that shipping shouldn’t be an issue.
Cheers,

What size/s are you after? A quick internet search suggests approx 9 mm square section.
I have some "scantlings" kindly sent to me as extras in some wood purchases by Woodchopper. Scantlings is perhaps not the right word as any genuine ebony is a valuable resource and should not be wasted. If you aren't chasing much quantity and only require small cross sectional pieces I may well be able to recover it from the scantlings.
I also have a few pen blank sized pieces but I'm saving them for personal "special projects."
Woodchopper may well chime in, plus hes a bit closer to you.Mobyturns

Yes they are around about that size. I will be using a 3/8 mortise chisel so I was looking for 10mm stock I guess. I’d be happy to take any off your hands that you don’t have a use for. Happy to pay obviously.
I need to make about 30 plugs for a staircase.

So I guess you will require 450 - 500 mm of 10 x 10 mm. I will check what is there. Do some minor cracks bother you? Easily remedied with CA glue.
As an aside - why ebony for a staircase? Surely there are cheaper options, & more readily available not so scarce woods that will offer just as good a contrast?Mobyturns

Yeah that sounds about right.
No absolute reason really. Call me a traditionalist I guess. The stair case is going to be quite a dark antique brown so this will be the greatest contrast I can get short of dying the timber.

Apologies for taking a while, not a great week for me.
Had to dig out the box - went through it - two possibles - both rough sawn as received. Remember these are scantlings from another woodie that I have acquired for small accents only. Unsure of species. Measurements are nominal. Both should dress to your required sizes with care.
230 x 35 x 14 mm - bowed per photos. Darkest of the two and shows "blackest" when wetted. In the 4th photo a straight rip of radiats has been aligned end to end with the bow in the middle shown, ruler for scale.
