    Default Elm

    As the title says really. Elm.

    There doesn't seem to be much information available on this timber. Has anyone used it? What is is like in terms of hardness etc? I found a pic of some elm furniture, which looks pretty appealing to me: Elm Table and Benches | Make Furniture | Nelson | NZ.

    There is someone a few hours away from me who is selling a few cubes of air dried elm and I'm wondering if it could be a good candidate for a dining table I have planned.

    Any thoughts?

    Elm. Lovely timber. Beautiful grain when back sawn: boring when quarter sawn. Sometimes difficult to air dry; tends to pull and distort if not racked correctly, leading to excess wastage.

    Traditional uses are for coffins, joinery and furniture. Interior use only. Deteriorates quickly when exposed to the elements.

    Can be abrasive,and can quickly dull edges of dressing blades. Finishes to a deep lustre, and glues and varnishes well. At least that's my experience anyway.
