Thread: Emu Apple ???

Emu Apple or Owenia acidula is from western QLD/NSW. I have used it before and still have a few boards of it left, although I don't think the thickness would be suitable for pens (15mm). It has high levels of silica in the wood (blunts tools) depending on the site that it is growing on. Send me a PM and I'll see if I can get some limbs etc to you, although I can't promise it.

"Petalostigma quadriloculare"
Known as Bitter-bark, Emu Apple, or Wild Quince. A moderate size tree of the north coast of NSW and coastal districts of Queensland, always occurring in groves. The timber is hard, close grained, brownish, with a fiddleback figure. The white sapwood is firm and about an inch in width. It has a weight which corresponds to 48 lb per cubic foot (yes, the reference book is about the same vintage as I am).

You replied while I was still writing mine.

We knew that as Emu Plum, but names vary from place to place. I would have thought the colour was more yellow, but that also may vary from place to place.

By the way, I was born in Miles.

I won't hold that against you (being born in Miles that is). For me it's home and I love the place.
I have slabbed some trees of Emu apple or Emu plum as you called it.
It has a pink to light/dark red colour when first cut (green) then oxidises and turns a caramel colour. The only drama I have with it is the high levels of silica in the timber which tends to blunt tools, I can't even put it through the drum sander without getting scorch marks along the timber. I have turned a little of it and it comes up great with a wax or oil finish.

I can't help you with the emu apple, but here is a shot of a quick slice I took of the irish strawberry. I am getting a chainsaw tomorrow to cut a few boards and will send some on to you. The colour is mainly pink.

I've got a couple of trees I'm going to Knock over one day if someone is real keen they can come and pick up some. Not very big though and short logs, by the time you get through the sap there wouldn't be a lot left.

The only Emu Apple I know of grows in Central-Western Queensland.
I've never cut any to see what it looks like.
I must try some the next time I'm out there.
