Thread: Firewood is better than my "good" wood...

I always check out firewood piles, often you find a bit they couldn't split any further, to narly and twisted but perfect for small pieces

I so totally relate to this. I'm getting firewood at the moment and it's really frustrating! So much Blackwood, Figured stringy. It seems every time I have a pile at the front of the trailer to put aside for makin' stuff or sellin'. Then I gotta find time for milling it and find somewhere to stash it. Ohhh life is so tedious.

Any idea what it is?

Looks like it could be Messmate (a stringybark) to me from bark and the gum veins.

Too true! I found these rather nice bits of fiddlebacked Black Wattle in MIL's firewood pile, a while back: BW handles.jpg

I had to knock a few more bits of wood off here & there to release the handles, of course... The irony is, I took the wattle there in the first place - cut up the butt of a tree in a pile of rubbish that was waiting to be torched. Most of the black wattles around my place are full of grub holes & defects, but still, I must've had a brain fade not to at least look at the wood before hacking it into firewood sized billets. Just lucky I got bored during the next visit & wandered out to split a bit of wood....
