Thread: Flame Mackay Cedar. You won't see better

Attractive stuff greg......pity it has a reputation for being so toxic....many woodies complain of nasty side affects when working this stuff....it is to be handled with a great deal of care,so beware!!

That's what they call it.
But silky and even red cedar can cause allergic reactions.
Its a very stable hand timber that doesn't move.
All the Hog's Breath Cafes use it as tables part of their corporate internal design.
Easy to plane or sand and spectacular timber.
A million hogs can't be wrong.

Merely warning the unsuspecting......this is a particularly toxic wood...in a class all on its own....that's why it is worth warning people...be vigilant when working it,in other words a good quality mask and protective clothing must be worn...might save you going to the hospital....

Wow Greg. I'm aware of the reactions some have with this timber, but boy, I'd risk anything for that pattern. That's something special. The two bookmarked pieces you show are spectacular.

It does come up nice but it is one of the crookest timbers I have ever worked.

It can make you real crook, real quick.... termites walk around it.

Mal is a simple man, everything costs whatever he can get for his timbers, but these will go round $8-10/super foot, in fact someone ho visited him has already claimed 15 boards.
Most mackay cedar isn't as wild, more red centred, it is very stable, easy to sand or thickness, slippery but finishes well.
As I said, all Hog Breath restaurants use it for their tables and benches as it is hard, stable and spectacular and doesn't get damaged by the hogs.

damn there nice boards is as a local timber for me its been a while to see a board or 2 like that bet they wont last unless they dont like my local SNEEZEWOOD

On the subject of allergy, it and albizia fastigiata are the only timbers that have ever driven me out of my shed when the CNC is working on them. My lungs just stop working if I stay there. I won't touch them with hand sanders for the same reason. Absolutely magnificent timber, but it'll kill ya!
