    Default Type of wood

Hi everyone. First time poster. Long time reader.

Firstly I find it nigh impossible to determine what woods I have.. they're all a shade of red and unfortunately I can only afford cheap second hand timber so none of it has any history.

I planned this today and was pleasantly surprised with it. It is very dense. One of the densest pieces I have.

Would anyone know what it may be. As for the imperfections in it. Is it worth planning more off or would that risk losing the figure.

    It does look like Myrtle.

Don't worry too much about losing the figure, you should be able to comfortably take a few mm off with no problem; if it looks the same on the other side you're definitely safe.

Hard to tell from photo if that is just the grain or quilting. Maybe Myrtle maybe Maple??? Can you give us some more photos, side & end grain, plus where is it from.

You say the densest piece you have, neither Maple or Myrtle are really dense, in USA terms maybe but not Aus. What are you comparing it to?

It is 135x38x607 and weighs about 1.9kg so about 610kg/m3. using rough scales though. Remeasured by adding more weight to the scales, and its showing closer to 3-4kg. Think i will need to work out another way of measuring or invest in some better scales or cut off a small piece.

    More photos.

I am not getting the other pics but the first one looks a bit like brushbox. That long ripple and the red-brown colour. The most distinctive thing about brushbox is the very very fine grain, not like any other heavy Oz type timber.

Toymaker Len beat me to it. I have some brushbox in the shed that looks just like that. I even have the same lines along its length from nicks in the thicky knives.

it is. So what I was saying was I couldn’t tell whether it was just the layers showing, or the 3D effect of quilting, that also helps identify timber. Ie some are known for their quilting

just looked again and got it. Second pic the piece lying flat looks more like myrtle to me now. That backsawn grain pattern doesn't fit brushbox. How much did you get for how much?!.
