Fruit woods in Melbourne
Hi all,
I build wooden model ships (and other scale wooden models) and so am always after woods with very fine grain.
Some of the best woods in this regard - and recommended for models - are fruit woods: apple, pear, cherry, etc. At present I use other woods, but would love to incorporate these in my work.
Does anyone know where I could get fruit woods in Victoria? Or elsewhere in Australia (although I'd prefer to avoid postage). There's a market for them overseas, but not here.
I'd prefer boards but am able to resaw logs, etc so am open to harvesting the wood myself - if there's no other sources, perhaps I can approach orchards?
Thanks for any suggestions.
Regards,
Darren

You might have a look at municipal tips which often have a section for the recycling of tree waste. Kimbriki tip at Mona Vale in Sydney for example has a huge turnover in timber.
Also if you get a chance try some privet, it has very fine grained white timber.

The Fruit Woods.
Hi Darren,
You have stated the Woods, but what sizes are you looking for.
I take it you not leaning towards Green Timber.
As a Turner, there is no better than Apple or Pear, there is also Cotoneaster, Hard, Stable, comes in all sizes.
Depends how much Wood you are looking for as well.
Maybe able to help.
Could you PM me of your Location.
Using " Melbourne " makes it difficult to know where you really are situated, but of course that is your prerogative .Regards,
issatree.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies.
Len, thanks - I keep an eye on council clean-ups for anything suitable, and will try the tip. We don't have one like Mona Vale near here (I used to live near there). Will give Privet a go if I can find it - I've also been told Photinia Robustus is good too, like boxwood but hard to find in decent sizes.
Issatree, PM sent. I'm only after bits up to 1m in length really, and even shorter bits are usefull for fittings, small parts, etc. I'd rarely make anything longer than 1m long. Thanks for the offer to help.
Oh, and whilst green wood isn't ideal, it would be fine as I'm happy to wait for it to season (and cut trees myself if that's an option).

Yep - yards is one place.... Perhaps post on Craig's list...
Another idea is apple orchards... The "Modern" way is to pull all the trees up after 10-15 years and plant new... and they will either sell or give away the trees... or burn them all...
Thanks
