Getting timber veneered
Just got back from a timber collecting trip with a group from the IWCS up north-west. Amongst others (will post later with photos) I scored some super rare Ooline burl (fallen tree on ground with permission). The tree is rare and protected but the burl is almost unheard of.
I could cut thin slices myself with my ultra thin TCT bandsaw blade but I would still lose some from the blade kerf. So does anyone know of any company that does small lot veneering with a slicing knife rather than cutting?Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Maybe talk with some of the large veneer suppliers and you may be able to get it sliced by one of them of they may know of a custom slicing crowd.

Only timber slicing equipment I've seen was for plywood and used whole logs. The veneer was sliced from a rotating log. Hopefully somebody knows of a process more suitable to your material.

I must say at the outset that I have not dealt with this company. The extent of my knowledge is that I found them in a Google search and bookmarked them, only on the basis that they seemed to do something interesting. This was back in the day when I was researching many things, and saving links right left and centre. Pretty much like any day of the week, really.
Anyhow, these guys seem to do a lot with veneer, and may or may not be able to help you directly - but they might be able to point you in the right direction: Index
Would be keen to hear how you go with it - best of luck!

Doesn't Tas Sculpter do a lot of veneering..... I.e cutting it up? He may be worth a pm, if not to do it then at least know if you're hunting in the right woods?

Neil, Have you tried this place called Matilda Veneer in Molendinar?
Our ethos is to source uncommon and hard-to-find timber, and to produce veneers at high quality when particular species can be notoriously hard to work with. Our aim is to ensure that our customers have access to products that are truly distinctive. This creates an end product of sophistication, quality and uniqueness for their clients.

Hi Neil. I spent weeks working on this last year and got nowhere. Most were unhelpful. or didn't care bit I never found the ones suggested here so I will be watching with interest.

See what happens.
I unpacked the trailer today and what I thought was the best block was a chunk of the tree, after the burl was cut off . Great grain on one side but very shallow and hollow trunk on the other side. Someone else obviously got the main burl piece . The best bit I have is a corner cut but again burly trunk with very little actual burl. Plus one little sliced off burl.
So this could all be a waste of time anyway, nothing worth veneering probablyNeil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new
