    Default Small gloat

Went to Lazarides for something else t'other day & spotted a couple of chunks of 'Ring' Gidgee - not as finely fiddlebacked as some bits I've seen, but this will make some very nice bits & pieces like marking gauges & squares. Not cheeep, but I think I will be able to 'value-add' a bit!

What I went for was a small bit of Qld Walnut. I got that, too - the very last piece in the place.

    Cheers,
    IW

    Hi Ian,

Yep, good score there. Some nice colour variation too, which I have not seen a lot of. I love ringed Gidgee too. Onya !!!

Now I want to see the marking gauges and squares it will turn into.

    Cheers

Well, don't get too excited, Pops - it's still pretty green. It will take a bit of time to dry out, then I have to get those round tuits. Give me at least a year......

I did try to hurry things along today, by slicing it into 3 pieces. This was prompted by some deep radial cracks that went more than 1/2 way through at one end. Unfortunately, the block was also cut so that the grain ran obliquely through it, and the cracks had followed suit. The smallest of the offcuts is distinctly wedge-shaped. It will be a challenge dreaming up the best use for that bit!

    Cheers,

I like these types of design challenges. Back in 2006 I made this marking gauge from a triangular piece of ebony that was only 50 x 60 x 90 mm, x 300 mm long.

I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

    Nice lump there Ian

I scored two small slabs of figured ringed Gidgee at the Maleny show from George McNab (Wood Cutter on this forum) last year. I also scored a log directly from him (ie his place) in the past year. Like most of my timber, still waiting for it to tell me what to make out of it

    Hi Ian,

Shame about the cracks, but you have plenty of time to ponder how to put the blocks to best use.

    I will be patient.

    Cheers
