Agree Mapleman. its pretty and with a nice a aroma.
But one caution - one needs to be careful with this semi-mangrove species if cutting the tree ... it has a milky sap which can cause temporary blindness and so called Blind-you-eye). Many in the Euphorbia family have this. But wood, once dried, is free of this irritating sap.

Yes...Excoecaria agallocha is quite toxic and will also cause the skin great irritation (blisters etc)...MM

Yep love the stuff. I can also confirm it’s nastiness wrt sap, one drop from washing my hands had me blind and out of action for 3 days.

    Where did you score yours?

It certainly is a beautiful timber. I never thought I'd see Gutta Percha mentioned in the WWF. It is famous for providing waterproofing for the original submarine cables in the nineteenth century. I'm not sure what material was extracted from the wood. It was discovered in Johor in the 1840s and was one of the first exports from Singapore along with pepper.

One for the store of useless information...

Palaquium gutta is likely the one your quoting Glider...latex was the material extracted (natural thermoplastic) and used extensively for insulation purposes...Gutta in Malay means latex gum (getah) and Percha is the local name for the tree itself...Mimusops globsa was another tree used to extract latex as well...MM

In the 1880's the Davis Level & Tool Co in the USA was using Gutta Percha for the wrist handles of their range of braces.
