For a bit more info try www.mockmickey.com . There are a number of specialty suppliers out there who stock it.

    Hi Jonathon,
hairy oak is a she-oak (Allocasuarina inophloia) from Qld dry areas. There should be some specialty timber suppliers in Brisbane who will have some. I get it from my mother in laws property north of Dalby (but it's mine all mine, you hear!?) Oops sorry got carried away, it does that to me.

Hairy oak also goes by the name of Flame Sheoak. I got some from Mullumbimby at the Canberra WWWS a couple of years ago. It made a nice jewellery box for my mum's Christmas - many brownie points! I found it quite easy to work with, maybe a bit crumbly towards the lighter outside, but maybe normal people don't try to squeeze EVERY last bit of useable wood out of a plank...

Rose Sheoak is a red one, to start with anyway. There is also another species in WA that is red, I just can't remember the name.

    Robyn,

Mum's jewellery box looked like the top one of your pics, but then having never tried to turn it I've no idea about the other one...

No it just fell off or had fallen off before I inherited it and a few of it's mates. You can still see a little bark and the hairs on the right.
I dont have any natural edge bowls but I have a little ring holder I made a few years back but it's split. Must have gone too close to the pith trying to squeeze every last bit of timber into something

Robyn2839, your box definitely looks like flame she oak/hairy oak, the turning looks more like WA she oak or possible rose she oak.

    Cheers

If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck and looks like a duck then it's a friggin duck.
