    Default Hakea Salicifolia

Well it's fire wood time and I cut some Hakea dead falls that have been down in the bull paddock for sometime, a lot of it was too rotten to even bother with but I found a few that had some nice solid heart left in them. As I was splitting it I noticed that it seemed to have lovely coloring and (I won't know until I sand a piece up) a real nice texture. Is this tree used much for cabinet making in Aussie?

Doubt it. It really is just a large shrub and would rarely yield anything usable.
But Hakeas are in the Proteaceae family, along with Grevilleas, and the timber will have the medullary ray figure (when quarter sawn) that is typical of this family.

Wizened is correct but he has discounted the fact that turners can use the smaller diameters and the Hakea family have some beautiful colouring and figure for small turnings - something to think about!

We've planted lots of them on our property as tubestock - after 7 years the largest would be about 5-6m high. Its still a bush though; the biggest branches would be maybe 100mm diameter at most. I'd say no prospects as a furniture timber, but those pen tragics can turn stuff out of anything....

    Careful they night hear you.

Other turning tragics can use Hakia too. I got some off a really gnarly one up the road. I love anything with mandullry rays.

Never mind Hakea, I've heard that if they can't get any timber some of them will even use seed pods, coloured plastic....any shiny thing they can get hold of....

(don't mind me, I'll just keep digging.....)

Just realised that I've never seen the timber from our Hakea Salicifolia, mainly because its about the only thing we have planted that has never died or been blown over. I've lost count of the number of Blackwoods we've lost due to wet feet, Grevilleas blown over, etc.
