    Default Help out Timber ID

    Hi, there

    I'm new member from China.

I have some 6cmx4cmx1cm timber samples in hand.

Unfortunately, I could only know the Chinese name, but in China, there're too many different names.

I was wondering who can helps me out with English common name(see below photos)?

    Thank you very much.

    Owen Xiong

A lot of timbers there and very hard to know exactly what they are from photos alone. You could try something like this site http://www.wood-database.com/ or this one is even better http://www.hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/

Perhaps there is a site in China for your common names, so you can look up the botanical names, then looks those up for the English common names.

Thanks a lot. It really helps.
And more question: Where do you get the timber blanks? From online shop, like ebay?
In China, we normally buy from TAOBAO.

I cut my own, but a lot is sold in these forums too, in Market Place. I also buy from Ebay and other forums and sellers from around the world. There are also Facebook groups that sell timber blanks here and overseas. Unfortunately postage is the killer with overseas stuff but sometimes it's worth it for that extra rare piece.

Here's some sites I have purchased from:

Default IWCS & Correctly Identified Wood Samples

I suggest you learn about or maybe join the International Wood Collectors Society (IWCS) whose members buy, collect, exchange wood reference samples. The advantages with this Society is they are often more informed than and the samples are more likely to be correct (authentic) ie identified correctly as many wood are collected by members or from more repultable suppliers. Common names lead to much confusion or misleading identifications (some is intentional ie capitalisng or profiteeringb on basis of some names) esepcially where big commercial interests are inviolved.

IWCS is "a non-profit Society devoted to distributing information on collecting wood, correctly identifying and naming wood specimens, and using wood in creative crafts"
