Can someone help me with how much this timber is worth- red cedar and Silky oak
Hey all,
I recently came across a bloke in my local area wanting to offload some timber he picked up a while back off another woodworker.
He said it is red cedar and Silky oak, some reclaimed, some new. He had no more details on seasoning, figure, m3 etc. All I have is a picture and a price and wanted to decide if it was worth driving down with a ute and making an offer.
I love how everyone on this forum is so honest and willing to help and feel if I send the link here I won't find it gone the next day!
If anyone is willing to take a look Id love to send the link and see your thoughts.
Thanks guys

By the looks of the photos, your gonna need to go there in person and decide whether its worthwhile. Or ring him and ask him to put an ounce worth of effort into his listing and ask for some dimensions and usable length quantitys. with the current information given by the seller, $300 -> tell him he's dreamin!

Timber is only worth what someone will pay for it.
To put it bluntly, people who have timber overestimate its value.
In particular, the uninformed overestimate the value of silky oak and to only a slightly lesser extent red cedar ....... there are demo yards full of the stuff in certain areas.
This guy seems to have a whole pile of relativly small pieces of timber ..... that in timber yard terms would be of no commercial value.
People WILL pay good money for small packages of well prepared and well presented small pieces of qulaity timber for "craft uses".
I have no doubt that there would be $300 worth of good timber there .... IF it was prepared, packaged and presented properely AND if you where buying only what you needed for a project already planned.
BUT, if you are buying a pile of timber on a speculatory basis having no specific idea of what is there and without a specific need ..... not $300.

There are other species in there besides silky and cedar. Personally, I reckon if he wanted to give it to me I would have to think long and hard. Oft times it's just more trouble than it is worth. My 2c

Hey guys thanks all for the opinions, I ended up driving down and having a look as it turned out to be a fair bit closer than I thought.
To be honest 60-70% was reclaimed and some of it needed a lot of work and re-sawing which would of lost a lot of timber. There was also more silky than there was red cedar! ( not to mention potential nails to remove before jointing and thicknessing)..
I definitely would not pay the $300 and told him if he would split of some of the nicer blocks at any point I may be interested at the right price.
In regards to Soundman- I do agree there are yards full of the stuff around I just do not have the buck to buy it in industrial lots so I am one of those buyers looking at craft amounts...
On another note does anyone know where I could get some nice timbers in SE QLD. A few months ago everyone would of said mapleman...I never had the chance to buy much off maple man as I was just getting started, but its sad that there is no longer an abundance of adds in the market place!!
Thanks again all!

Melany is Sat 30 April to Mon 2 May, see Maleny Wood Expo
I also have heaps of timber and willing to sell, but sorry I am not as cheap as Mapleman . I am not a timber merchant although I do have ~11t in various quantities made up of 179 species at present . I am going to Maleny but not to sell timber. I'm at Nerang on the Gold Coast, PM me if you are interested in visiting.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

I'm a carver. First and foremost, I create wood pieces that look like those (different species). From what you explain, woodworker/owner #1 probably selected all the really good stuff for projects, leaving a pile of offcuts. Woodworker/owner #2 only discovered that after purchase. It's possible that somebody ate the orange and now they're trying to sell the peel? If you were a wood turner, maybe at a lower price. I don't want to rain on your parade.

Re silky! Just be aware that it is illegal to sell silky that has not been fumigated in a number of states.
G Robusta is prone to borer usually in just the sap wood. I made the mistake of buying rather a lot and spent a generous amount of time getting rid of the infected bits. Nice timber though!

Chances are old reclaimed silky isn't robusta... It wasn't often milled back in the day because Cardwellia was so available and it's a far better timber. just sayin'
