Default How much do I put on this?

    Hello all.
I have some qld Maple that would be near 100 years old. it was from the stock that was used in the old parlament house ACT(wall paneling ect)
    size as follows;
    1 x 5m x 300 x 75(dead straight)
    1 x 2.7m x 300x75 (dead straight
    1 x 5m x 300 x 50 (slight bow)
    1 x 2.7 x 300 x 50 (straight)

Im thinking of offloading it but have no idea what its worth.
    Regards

You could always cut it in 300 x 300 blanks and flog them through E-bay at similar prices to what the others are charging for similar pieces. If you get, say, $25 on average for 48 blanks you make $1200.

    Ouch Frank
Ive been babying this stuff for years, Ive moved it from canbera to several suburbs in Sydney, then to Qld. Its cost me a fortune in removal fees. If I cut it up 15 years ago, Id have saved $1200 in moving it
seriously, I dont think I could bring myself to cut 17ft of Q maple down.
But $25 a superfoot sounds about right for maple with colour

So, you do have an idea, after all. You are valuing the timber at around $11,000 a cube, which seems a bit generous for local timber, but I am no expert. This means that you expect to get around $3,000 for your 0.29 m3. If this is what you believe is fair, advertise at this price and see what the response is. You never know, somebody might be looking just for that kind of timber. It might take some time to find out, though.

Good luck and welcome to the forum, anyway.

    it is worth a fortune.

anything ovre 200 wide is verry hard to get your hands on i recently was offerd $300 for 3m of 300mm x 37m spotty gum. this was well under the price he was quoted for 6m of 125mm x 25mm. i told him he could have it for $200.

    iron bark is now in 300mm x 25mm is $60 per m.

    charge what you want.

I wouldn't cut it up into turning blanks.
If you can't sell them you have a lot of exxy firewood

The way around this is not to cut it up until you have a buyer for a specific length.

I'd advertize using a sliding scale eg
    - $x per ft for ft long pieces
    - slightly less than $x per ft for lengths between 3 and 6 ft
    - and slightly less again per ft for longer lengths.

Sure someone else could buy it all and flogg it for blanks but then it's their risk and not yours

    Hi

Your problem is finding the right buyer.

Unfortunately there is not really enough to do anything with what you've got without cutting it up and it would be a shame to cut up something so "GOOD" and so "STRAIGHT".

You have a limited market at that size and you don't know what size to cut it until you sell it

Apart from that how can you cut it exept into fairly small pieces? Even then it is a little difficult to handle for most home workshops.

If it can be "proved" to have come from the parliament house timber stock, then you may be better of selling it to tourists and the like, in "morsel" pieces with a certificate of authenticity.

It would still be a shame to cut up something that must be soooo nice, BUT in morsel pieces you might make a fortune on eBay and the tourist trade. This may be a terrible thought but it MIGHT be worth thinking about

Ah, a thought! Why not approach your local TOP OF THE RANGE builder and sell it to them (for a small fortune of course, as they'll get their money back from the homebuyer) and the builder could then implement it within one of their CLASSY homes. They would make good conversation pieces as they span the dinning room or home theatre.

    Good luck.
    Kind Regards

    Peter

Thanks for all the info fellas, Here is the story behind the timber.
    Fifteen years ago;
My wife(Then girlfriend) Had a girlfriend whose Dad I became friends and had a common interest in wood. His Father was a carpenter that did work in the old parlament house back when it was built. He also maintained it for some years. I was told he was in his 90's and he had some "special" maple under his house and all he wanted for it was a smokey Dawnson chair. and that it has to go because his crazy daughter wants to throw it out.
So off we go to my friends dads fathers house in the ACT(with my friends dad). When I entered the house it was filled with the most beautiful QLD maple furniture Id ever seen and in pristine condition. I remarked on the colour and fiddlegrain of the wood. I was told by the old man "No Stain, thats it" Thats what you come for". He made all the furniture and the stock is stickered under the house, "Its the stuff thats in parliment house, I got the last of it"
He said it was at least 80-90years old and very dry.
I bought the timber but remember feeling bad for doing so.
I told him that I will do it justice But Ive never found a project that would do such a timber justice with so much history or importance.
He was happy it went to a woody.
He,s passed now, years ago and Im not sure if im "doing it Justice" by just holding onto it.
I thought of making a kingsize bed with an alnate head??? what else do you do with 17ft boards?.
    thats the delima

Why not commission a pro artistian joiner to make you a family heirloom from it, they may discount for the left overs?(these blokes/gals know the real value of boards like that)
At least then it gets put to good use and you keep your word to the craftsman you obtained it from.

If it's 1/4 sawn with some figure and nice colour you'll probably maximise your profit by selling it as acoustic guitar back and side sets. But that'd mean cutting it up and resawing it, either by you or the buyer.

PM me if you're interested and I'll put you in touch with some people who might be interested.
