Where to get Huon?
Hi all,
I'm hoping someone out there can help me in my quest to get some huon pine for a carving project
The final carving (of a lion) will be approximately 500mm high and wide by 300mm deep.
and unfortunately its proving to be incredibly hard to find the material to make it from.
In a perfect world i'd be after slabs maybe up to 100mm thick to glue up to make the block, but 30-50mm would do fine too since i'd imagine they're more readily available?
Just wondering if anyone's had any luck being able to source any larger sizes like this and if so, where from?
Also curious as to what sort of commonly available widths i might expect to be able to get?
Any help would be muchly appreciated,
Cheers,
Damien

Have a look either at eBay (yes, eBay) or Island Speciality Timbers. They will have what you want. Or do a search on Tasmanian timber mills and ring a few to find out what they've got.

Three Sources
Hi Damien
Three sources with heaps of huon are:
Tasmanian Specialty Timbers, Queenstown and Strahan (more commonly known as Morrisons).
https://www.tasmanianspecialtimbers.com.au/
Island Specialty Timbers, Geeveston - commercial arm of Forestry Tasmania.
Island Specialty Timbers » Island Specialty Timbers
Britton Timbers, Smithton - the big boys.
Huon Pine
Huon is actually readily available, just expensive. You can get anything from a sheet of veneer to an entire log!
Cheers
Graeme

Might have to pop in and have a look.
Just had a look and they also have a branch in SE Qld.

Just an FYI and it may be different for you, I contacted Britton about buying a few boards (about 0.5 m3) a few years ago and they referred me on to Watts Wood in Salisbury, I don't think they're overly interested in selling smaller amounts. Have you checked out Watts Wood? I'd be surprised if they didn't have a single board of Huon.

G'day all,
Try Trevor Gaskell from TG Creations in Burpengary just north of Brisbane - phone 07 31420754. I was down there earlier in the week with a mate from Castlemaine who drove up just to get good timber. I picked up a piece of clear grained huon 800 x 230 x 70 for $100 as well as flame myrtle planks, some sassafras, macracarpa planks, really dark red cedar and some of the most highly figured tassie blackwood I have ever seen. My mate got much the same but also some celery top pine. There was quite a lot of huon there so he may have something suitable. He is stocking up for the Maleny show.
My mate makes guitars and had heard of a mill Kirby Fine Timbers in Diamond Valley out of Mooloolah village which is not far from Maleny and is just below Montville and Bald Nob in a valley full of rainforest - just getting there was an experience and great drive. They sell many species of good timber but aren't that keen on selling small craft pieces so be prepared to buy $500+ (?) - splitting packs and sorting through the pack is too time consuming and costly. They supply North Queensland maple to Maton and Cole Clark guitars in Melbourne - my mate bought a fair bit of this, both body and neck stock. They have some beautiful African Mahogany, red cedar, hoop and bunya pine, silky oak (north and south), silver ash etc. I bought some silver quandong for box making. Sam Kirby was extremely helpful and friendly - he will be at the Maleny Show as well. They have a good web site.
Between TG Creations and Kirby we both had a very enjoyable two days buying some very good quality timber. My mate will be shortly heading back to Victoria which isn't such a bad place if I can say that as a Queenslander. I have convinced him to take a slow trip back via Mark and Brad Williams in northern NSW for camphor stock, CedarWorks in Junction Hill near Grafton for good cedar and rosewood and Mick at the Ulmarra Gallery for whatever is on sale at the time. Then down to near Lithgow for a walk through the Wolgan Valley railway tunnel or glow worm tunnel then down the NSW far south coast and Gippsland - should be a great slow drive.
This sounds like a wood commercial but these people do really have some very good timber. I have bought timber and veneer off Brittons and Island Speciality Timbers in Geeveston in Tassie in the past however getting it back to the mainland is a big problem if you are buying timber in some quantity. Rob Keogh of Brittons was especially helpful - I presume he is still with them.
Regards and good luck with the search for huon,
Bill

Some excellent sources suggested! I'll start making some calls come Monday. Fingers crossed the guys in NSW and Queensland are okay with sending it.
The advice is much appreciated
Cheers,
Damien
