Bugger that, Bob. I have 3 smallish huon slabs that came from IST (Island specialty timbers) which is the Govt business that has the monopoly on huon and other "minor species". they came as part of a bigger purchase and they've got the IST labels (with prices)still on. You can have them at cost if you're interested. As far as offcuts go, my mate was down there only a month or two ago and he paid $15 for a coaster-sized limb slice about 20mm thick. I don't think there is any such thing as an "off-cut"...

Huon pine is available all over tassie.

If you are just after little bits the Salamanca Markets stalls sell small pieces and the prices arent that bad.

But you do need to head to Geeveston anyway for a look and there are small places down there.

Bob,Morrisons Huon Pine Sawmill at Strahan. I was over in Tassie last year, got plenty off shorts, that I paid for, plus off cuts of 25mm huon out of their bin. Don't forget to take a trip up the Franklin River.

Strahan is where I got mine last year. You're likely to pay for every bit of Huon pine.

Even the shavings appear to be worth something - put a porous bag of the stuff in your cupboards and they'll keep all the bugs away. They'll charge you a couple bucks for a bag of the stuff.

Do as ninefingers says. Done it twice myself and very happy both times.

thanks for the info guys , looking forward to the trip, hope its not bloody rough on the ship, be interested to see the price of fuel there, the funny part is it is produced in bass straight , and by the time we get it its gone through the roof,lps conversion in two weeks time for my new 4x4 $3500 plus gst, someone is making some money, suppose as soon as its done gas will be $1.30 a litre. bob

Dont forget to look up Bradshaws mill as well near Queenstown,not quite so comercial and you will get some a lot cheaper.

Don't miss the forestry salvage yard in Strahn. All sorts of beautiful bits of huon.

If you're interested in a range of turning blanks with good figure and varied species, strongly advise you drop in on Cockatoo timbers in the NW.

But do your research first as to what you want. They respond well to wood enthusiasts.

I know about 10 years ago we pulled down part of a balcony on a c1900 house in Hobart and discovered that most of the ballastrading was Huon pine. Not too sure if this is usual - but may be a secondhand timber yard may have some small bits?

Dad tells me how he use to love using Huon as firewood when he was a kid - it was the easiest thing to split!
