    Default Identifying burl species?

Is it even possible to identify the species of a burl? I posted a photo of some pen blanks I cut from a burl and have been asked what type it is. The burl I bought off a guy at the Maleny Wood Expo last year. He was selling burl by the kilo and had a monstrous pile of burls. So it was really, luck of the draw. I don't know where he got them but he is from somewhere just north of Brisbane so I'd say it would be from a common QLD species. Any ideas?P_20160228_171534.jpg

Just looks like Brown Mallee. Just because it was purchased at Melany doesn't mean the timber is from Qld

I've never seen a burl on Mulga or any of the central western Qld Acacias.

If there ever was one, I'd expect it to be much darker than that.

I am with you on this one Willy ... although you must admit a few WA & SA mallee burls also look very similar.
Its a euc for sure I'd say.

Identifying Burls (by colour alone) are very hard even to the very experienced eye.
