Default Identifying Local Perth Tree Species

This might be a completely stupid question but having only worked with wood from shops before (and knowing nothing about the looks of whole trees!), I'm just after what species this is. It was cut down recently in Piney Lakes Reserve in Perth.

It looks pretty cracked up, what're my chances of getting some useable wood out of this stuff? I've picked up two large (metre long, different thicknesses) pieces but might grab more if it's worth it.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello Mate
Bit hard for me to see with any detail, but I reckon what you have there is Peppermint. It looks okay when turned or carved. I have used a few of the burls from it as well, goes a light pink and will dry very quickly. There is tons of the stuff, especially close to beaches and foreshore areas
    Good luck

PS Whoops, just had a nother look at the foliage of your tree, it may be Rottnest island Pine, lovely to turn, is quite hard and has a nice fragrance
