laminated cabinet top for desk?!
Hi there,
I'm looking at making a computer desk and thought a quick and easy way would be to get a laminated top and then add legs, draws etc..
What I'm wondering is where do you get custom laminated bench tops and how much are they? Do cabinet makers do their own laminating or does the wood come like that from wholesalers?
I'm in Melbourne, so any links, ideas, suggestions that are relevant to Melbourne would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Andrew

Thought about a single piece of timber? Some species are not as expensive as you might think, and they look a hell of a lot better than laminated crap. I'm not too far away and maybe able to help you out if this option is of interest to you. What dimensions are you after etc..?

I'd tend to agree with Hornwood: Why chose a laminated top? Yes it will be more rigid and probably more stable, but those aren't good reasons for choosing a top. If nothing else, you'll be faced with edge trimming to cover the laminiations - never very good.
Think about the overall design first, then the mechanics of it. Adjust where necessary, but always aim for the design intent. IMO

I take your point - in actual fact I'm a web designer by trade so I understand the design considerations. There are some great laminates out there now which appealed to me more than wood grain, from an aesthetic point of view and more importantly from a functional point of view.
The desk I have in mind is going to be very purpose built to accommodate multi monitors and multi computers. At this stage it will be 1m deep and 2m wide (quite large).
But I might check out some timber yards and see whats on offer.
Thanks for your suggestions.

If you check the yellow pages you will find specialist bench top manufactures, they deal with things like post formed edges as well, you might find they also have redundent stock going at a discount

for the bench top try Ikea — they're probably much cheaper than anywhere else
I don't understand the need for the bench to be 1m deep though. Bung the hard drives underneath and just use thye bench for the monitors and keyboards
