I think it says a lot about the state of the timber business as a whole that
    (a) they're shutting the doors. Fair enough we all retire eventually but you should be able to sell/ lease a business as well established and highly regarded as Lazerides without too much issue one would imagine
    and
    (b) no-one is rushing in to take up the rack stock side of things.
    and
    (c) AFT went the same way not that long ago.

I was in Bootles in Townsville the other week - white oak, red oak, american walnut & cherry, Tas oak, some white stuff from Indonesia and a bit of Philippines Mahogany... not a single piece of Australian cabinet timber in sight. That says something about the industry too.

Mary wanted to go to Spotlight - I figured it was smart thinking on their behalf to site the store in a location bound to attract stray husbands.
Anyway, I was both suprised and disappointed to see what they were carrying, given it's only 200km down the road. I played dumb, and asked if it was possible to get Silky Oak, or Qld Maple or some other Australian timber. Apparently its not at all available anymore!!!

I wasn't dressed right... I'll give it 6 months or so and go back and when I get the same answer I'll drop them a business card. Not that I particularly want or need their business - after bull$h!t like that I don't - but it pisses me off that a timber merchant can look me in the eye and say it's impossible to get something local, because they tell that to all the customers who don't know better. I find that very irritating for some reason.

Default Lazarides Timber Recommends New Suppliers For Furniture Timber

Just happened to look at the Lazarides web site to see what it said about their closing down (the site didn't mention anything when I last check a few days ago). When I spoke to Gareth a week or so ago, he hinted at some of their business being taken up by other suppliers.

The following is extracted from an announcement on the main page of the Lazarides Timber web site, and addresses the question of alternative suppliers:

    To our valued clients

<dl class="article-info muted" style="margin-right: margin-bottom: 7px; margin- color: rgb(98, 98, 98); font-size: 0.9em; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line- 19.2000007629395px;"><dd class="create" style="margin: padding: line- 2"><time datetime="2014-11-28T06:35:47+00:00" itemprop="dateCreated" style="margin: padding: ">Created: 28 November 2014</time></dd></dl>We wish to advise that after 50 years in the timber industry Gareth has decided to take things easier, and as from 1st December we will be downsizing our operations.
We have sold the premises and regrettably we will no longer be able to supply the retail craft and wood turning market.
We realise that [the retail craft and wood turning market] was an important part of our business and we did not want to let our clients down. To this end we have arranged with Carbatec Pty Ltd, 128 Ingleston Road Wakerley 07 3390 5888 to purchase our stocks and continue to supply this section of the market.
For people requiring Cabinet Timbers for their special projects we recommend that you contact
    Bootle Timbers 07 3209 8655
    Britton Timbers 07 3887 8405
Gareth will continue to supply timber on a wholesale basis in pack lots. He can be contacted on our current number 07 3267 3899 until 20th December, then on his mobile 0418 741 399. If you require any advice on timber matters ,Gareth would be pleased to assist in any way he can.
Both Troy and Gareth would like to thank all of our clients and friends who have supported us since we established our business 25 years ago.
May we wish you well in all that you wish to achieve in the future.
