Want some liquid amber?

Had some drama last night when a large limb parted from the Liquid Amber on the naturestrip.
They are prone to this so Ive heard. The neighbours went last year taking down the powerlines a bit of house and a new BMW.
Lastnights damage took down the power and (the same neighbours new VW)

To say that they are not happy would be an understatement. They are calling for revenge in the form of the removal of the remaining tree which they had asked to be removed after their own tree came down.

Last time I just ignored them but I think that the tree is unstable now and must go. Its on the nature strip so the Council are responsible for the costs.

I thought that if anyone wanted some logs I could ask the contractor to chop to suit and then it would be up to you to take it away.

I'm on the Northern Beaches. Anyone interested? Does LA have anything going for it as timber - it has BA going for it as a tree.

I could tell it had some good character by looking at the peice that had come away, however because of the unprecedented demand for this wood I may be forced to start a Dutch auction and sell it to the highest bidder.

Don't want to rain on your parade but the only bit I've turned was a PITA to finish ... just keep soaking up the Danish Oil and ended up looking seriously boring.

Well dried Liquid Amber is IMHO one of the best woods of all to turn.
However, as Ern says it can be a bit boring to look at. Don't use Danish Oil. Finish with EEE followed by Shellawax and it will develop a lovely patina over time when used in salad bowls etc.

I live in Northern beaches if or when it is cut up let me know I might just have a look . I have never turned it before but never seen it turned before .

Liquid amber is a right PITA as a tree. Our council had planted two on the nature strip outside our place, about 300mm from the kerbing. They were less than 100mm at the bole but were already lifting the concrete. Council would not remove them or allow their removal, even though the neighboring council has them listed as a noxious weed.
One night they were mysteriously stuck by lightning - yes, both of them - and so I replaced them with a much friendlier species planted a metre from the kerb. Even from such small trees, the root system ran far beyond the drip line. While chopping up the remains, the timber didn't give me any feelings of wanting to use it in the workshop. - totally bland, much the same as some of the smaller camphor laurels blown down in storms.
So, do these trees need to be a certain age before the wood develops any decent figure?
