Looking for Oregon
I live in a Californian Bungalow and I want to reproduce some cupboards and fittings and I believe that the wood used originally was Oregon (Douglas Fir?) and then stained. Does anyone know where I can get the timber and what the stain was?
Regards
Colin

Hi and welcome!
You should be able to get the Oregon you need from a Timber Yard, or from a wrecker. I can't remember the price unfortunately. As for the stain, you could use a clear finish, or maybe a dark stain. Oregon can be very thirsty!
Regards,
Rob

I get Oregon beams and planks all the time from my local timber yard. But they are plantation timber, not old growth. And it's only in 6x 2, 8x2 beam type sizes. May be it's best to try a salvage yard first.

If you fancy a drive to the middle of the Blue Mountains (gorgeous at this time of year) you can go to a yard in Lawson (30 minutes or so from Penrith) that has an enormous amount of Douglas Fir in many sizes. The old growth stuff is far better than new plantation timber, IMO. Better colour, tighter growth rings (strength), but it can be a little brittle sometimes. Also beware of what I think may sometimes be Hemlock which looks very similar but has inferior colour and seems to be furry when planed.
I can find out the name of the yard, if it suits.
