    Default Looking for someone in Sydney with a moisture meter

    I've got some Swamp Oak that has been under covers for over 12 months now and I need to know the current moisture content, but don't have a moisture meter.
    The guy I got it from indicated it had been cut about 6 months prior. It's been air drying ever since.

    I know the general rule-of-thumb about 1in per year, but before I decide to use this stuff I'd like to get an accurate reading.

    Any fellow woodies in Sydney with a decent one that I can visit with a sample to get it checked ? (I'm near Bankstown).

    Next question then:
    1. anyone interstate that can help me out (I can probably cut some and post to someone to test for me).
    2. My only other option is to buy one - so where to buy it (and what should I get?)

    I have a wagner meter. It is supposed to measure to a depth of 3/4 inch but I just check around all four sides of big pieces and it seems to work. I'm in Lillyfield and happy to help if there is no one closer.

    Default Moisture Meter

    I bought a moisture meter on ebay for $36.00 all up. I use it on the Paulownia. I have tested the planks I buy in that have been kiln dried to 13% and then allowed to go back in the open. My meter shows the ends to be 17% which given the air moisture here is as expected. My point is that for $40.00 you can own your on fairly accurate instrument and check the timber any time. If 2 reading in a row over say 1 month are the same then it would be reasonable to assume that the timber has dried as much as the atmosphere will allow. That is what you want to know.
