Looking for Wood Stabeliser
Gday all. The Mrs wants me to make her a cake base for a wedding. Any idea if any curing/ stabilising agent is available here in melbourne? I've heard of Pentacryl Wood Stabeliser but aparently only available in the USA. Any advise or guidance is appreciated. Cheers.

There are a few. True stabilisers need the timber to be 0%MC and then soaked under vacuum before baking to harden it. The two available are Cactus Juice and Stickfast. But the vacuum chamber for a cake base would be huge and uneconomical.
Another option is Wood Hardner, a product that is painted on in many layers slowly soaking into the timber, and as the name suggests hardening it. This does not stabilise it but merely hardens up the surface.
Now comes the real question, are you trying to stop the cracking of the timber discs, cut from a log? If so, sorry it will not work. Your best bet is to cut discs from an almost dry stable timber log and hope for the best (it may still crack).
Alternatively you could except the cracking, or let it crack and then fill with resins, or cut it green just before the weeding and accept it is still green and only last 1 wedding
Hope this helpsNeil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Not knowing what look you are trying to achieve, I would consider ply cut in the desired shape.
More information really is required for a better answer.

Hi Notadj,
I make a heap of cake bases for my wife, including wedding cake bases. I turn them out of 10mm MDF, using a simple circle jig and the router. A quick hand sand, and done. She then covers them with foil or ices them. Works fine, she is semi-professional cake decorator, never any problems.

I can do you one in Cypress, this pic is of one at 50mm thick that has been air dried for about 6 or 12 months then sanded.
