    Default Does anyone know what "want" means in regards to timber.

    Hello, just asking if anyone has any idea what "want" means in regards to timber. I am currently doing an assignment and one the questions is to find the definition of want and draw a picture for it so please guys share your knowledge on here as I can't find anything online. \

    Wane is the appearance of the underbark surface of the log, which causes some of the arris to be missing on the piece. Sometimes the surface is smooth, but in other instances there is still bark attached.

    Want is the absence of wood from the surface or arris when it's caused by anything other than wane. For example, forklift damage or abrasions from chains can break off the edge of a piece and result in want.

    Mitchyt, Hi there. The only thing I know is I always "want" wood. Now I know that doesn't help in the exam but It's all I've got. Praps is there any indication of the context it's used in?
    Then again I did a bit of a Google thingy and found this on the 3rd page of the search.

    Default heres a pic 4 U



    This 'wayne' edge Jarrah coffee table top, has a 'want' in the 'wayne' edge that's been removed by grinding it out thru the cambium layer 'wayne' edge down into the timber proper.

    The 'want' was caused by the grabber fork of the CAT 950 Loader that lifted the log off the log truck for milling - the hydraulic action of the timber fork damaged the cambium layer creating the 'want' in the 'wayne' edge of the slab.

    Hope that helps and you get extra marks for showing a after photo - sorry I don't have a before photo of a 'want'.
