    Default Some nice wood.

    Hi All,
A couple of years ago I started getting into woodworking and turning and was looking for free wood wherever I could. I picked up a bunch of Cassia fistula, aka Indian laburnum or golden shower tree. Grows like a weed around Townsville.
The timber is beautiful. The sapwood is quite pale and the heartwood yellowish through to pinkish when first cut, but the heartwood darkens with exposure to light to a rich chocolate brown. The sapwood is borer heaven, but they can't or won't eat the heartwood. I've had pieces so chewed up on the outside you can crumble the sap with your hands - heart was solid.
It is heavy (800kg/cube) and quite hard but turns nicely and takes a beautiful polish just with wax.

First pic is a cutting board I made 18 months ago, next 2 are a carved bowl I did for my mother's birthday.

Turned plate/shallow bowl, fresh cut cutting board and comparison between the old and new timber colour. I turned the bowl about 6 months ago, colour is now pretty stable. If you see one of these trees coming down, it's worth grabbing the wood. Doesn't seem to split much while drying even as logs, too.
    Cheers, Robbie.
