    Default do what with oregon

    I-ve been given some oregon beams 200x50x4mt, they where left over from big pergola that was built, wondering what you cqn do with oregon in woodworking, can you make jewellery boxes etc? with it, I sure hate to waste it. Thanks everyone

    Tell the person you got it from to be careful. It rots very well if it is in a place where it regularly gets wet. I had to replace a bunch of oregon on a patio roof because it rotted out.
    The other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

    Think big Billylad! Tables, cupboard carcases, doors, rocking horses, I've done them all with oregon. The really old close grained and clear stuff is the best but you can still do nice work with newer stuff.

    Thanks all for your replies, guess I will have think bigger.
    Would love to do rocking horse, but I know I know I'm no good at carving, I'm into box making at the moment, so will haveto think bigger.

    Whoa!!!! I build violin tops from Douglas Fir. Gorgeous stuff when straight grained and quarter cut.

    Holmesy & I went to an ol' fellas house near me in Feb this year to look at a dozen saws he had.

    He had been a cabinet-maker for 20 or 30 years before changing to another job.

    He was very keen on oregon as a timber, and was a part of the reason I decided not to use the oregon I have for the outdoor workbench I was/am planning.

    He showed us inside to see things he had made for the house over time ... I found a couple of poor photos I took of his oregon table.

    Default How about some outdoor furniture

    I made some Adirondacks out of Oregon I got from a mates pergola. The slats were made from Cypress Pine Pickets as I didn't want to cut down the large sections of old Oregon.

    Default Amazing Prismatic veneer from Oregon

    On the back of the latest Fine Woodworking there is a showcase of a gu who creates sensational prismatic effects with quartersawn oregon - great effect for a fairly straightforward technique.
