    Default Pearwood?

I was wondering if anyone on here knew of anywhere (within Australia) that i might be able to get some european pear wood from?
Also, does anyone know of any other fairly close grained timbers that might make for a good substitute if i cant get it?

Colour doesn't really matter, its more the tightness of the grain that i'm interested in, and whether i'm able to get it in sizes above pen blanks.

Is there much of a difference between European Pear Wood, and ordinary orchard Pear Wood?

Size aside, an old orchard as a source, may be an option for you. Where I live there are many apple/peach/cherry orchards that remove trees on a regular basis if they are not commercially viable.

Agree with CAVA... its ordinary fruit pear (ie Eur Pear is same as fruit wood pear grown here) and old orchards are best source.

If you are in city I suggest you try camellia or crateagus or hawthorm stems which occassionally become available in sizes up to about 5-8". These timbers are all pale but fine textured. Some of these may split or twist badly when drying. So sealing ends and slow dring is recommended ....for some years.

Perhaps you could also try some PITTOSPORUM (you know the tree with unbdulating leaves and yellow berries). It was used as an engravers wood so is fine textured (and pale too). At least its seasons pretty well and is readily available in country Victoria.

African Pearwood (Olinia ventosa) is also an option if available over there?

Sapient Pearwood will follow you through as many lives or dimensions as you care to travel. It is impossible to lose an item made from SP.
    Sorry fudo, I blame Christos.
