    Default Pencils?

I was in my playroom till the heat (39C) got to me so now I'm here - but to get to my question:
I was sharpening my pencils before retiring to the cooler house and wondered what wood is used in pencil making. I wonder if it is available, because carving, I reckon, would be a breeze.

    Oopsy, no pun intended there.

    So ??????

I think the wood in pencils is poplar.

Have you seen these? pencils made from recycled newsprint.

Don't know about now, but Pencil Cedar was definitely used at some stage.

From my days at school, I remember a display put out by Staedler showing how pencils were made using cedar - looked like western red, but probably pencil cedar.

I've found two websites that state the "Incense Cedar" or "Californian Incense Cedar" is the timber used.

    And an excerpt from Wikipedia

"A juniper or incense-cedar plank with several long parallel grooves is cut to make something called a slat, and the graphite/clay strings are inserted into the grooves"
