Default PERTH - Suppliers of untreated pine or other workshop grade timber

I'm going to be making a ton of things for around the shed over the Christmas break (stuff like grinder stands, workbenches, outfeed tables etc). I'm looking to buy a ton of untreated pine so I'm not burning a hole in my wallet while I'm learning and making mistakes but I'm really having trouble finding places that sell the stuff. Called five timber yards today but coming up dry and from the responses I got it was like my request was a really strange one. Am I doing this wrong? What do people use when they want to build some stuff for around the shed? Only need machine graded or rough sawn stuff, I have my jointer and thicknesser up and running now so I'll be dressing it myself.

I've had people recommend the timber bloke so I'm going to see if he's open tomorrow but I'm pretty sure he's more into furniture grade timbers. Otherwise I've tried Colli, Pine Timber Products, Worldwide Timber, Perth Timber Co and WA Timber Sales and no luck. Allwood had some when I enquired about a month ago but with limited stocks and sizes available so I'm waiting to hear back about current availability before I go out there tomorrow.

FWIW I don't believe you can purchase untreated structural grade large size pine anywhere any longer in the West. The timber bloke is GREAT bloke but strictly good quality furniture grade stuff. Way to geed for benches. Just use the H2 (blue coloured) TP.

Put simply all of the bigger section pine is treated, you can still get the smaller section stuff in DAR...

You could do what I do, find old pergolas and roofing joists and such.
I have collected some and so when I need timber I dress it.
Since it cost me nothing it doesn't really matter if I stuff anything up.
I have managed to build various things out of recycled jarrah, karri etc.
You can't get better than a Jarrah workbench

Yeah been keeping an eye out for timber on Gumtree and the like but haven’t had much luck lately, maybe now that the weather has improved more will come about.

Okay definitely doesn’t seem like you can find untreated MGP in Perth any more. Thought Allwood had some but then turned up today and they’d made a mistake and actually only had dressed pine. They did have some small amounts of 45 x 90 but nothing larger.

Frustrating. Going to have to keep an eye out for recycled timber on the second hand market or spend a lot more on my first few projects. I did go out and see the Timber Bloke today which was pretty cool, got a few bowl turning blanks and a few metres of Sheoak which I’m going to rip down into some spindle turning blanks. Great place to deal with and was very satisfied with what I brought home for the price I paid. Definitely made up for the lack of luck earlier in the day!

    Hello Mate
Yes, Derek Doak can cut pine for you. He milled some a week or so ago, suggest you google ' Derek Doak, The Timber Bloke'. He is at 20 Lionel Street, Naval Base. Ring before you visit.

I ran into same problem just few days ago and was searching almighty internet for answers when stumbled upon this post.

It is most odd that there is no untreated pine available anymore. Just year or so ago it was not an issue as I built shelving in my storage room of untreated structural pine from Bunnings. Does anyone know the reason? My research shows that all other states have untreated pine available in Bunnings and other shops. What is the deal with WA?

Only substitution would be DAR pine but it is 2,5 times more expensive! I was looking to build workbench and with MGP10 90x45 untreated pine it would cost me about $130 but DAR would cost me around $340! Just unreal. And even when the bench would be constructed then all the coming projects and small builds... how, what? Pine is easiest and cheapest.

So what are other DIY and woodworkers here in Perth using or doing about the problem? It just seems so wrong. Im not really into treated stuff. You know 60 years ago they said asbestos is fine or 100 years ago that lead paint is ok. 30 years from now people (especially builders) start developing cancers and who knows what because of the treatment. So H2F stays away at least from my workbench that I would be touching regularly.

So any hope or suggestions? Does anyone know if they do treatment here in WA so by contacting the company and ask to put some timber aside before treatment?

    Cheers

    Hello Mate
As per the previous post, check out Derek Doak. I know he mills pine (turns and spits on floor), give him a yell

So after a week of emailing, calling and driving I finally got what I wanted. If you are interested I can share my research with you.

Places that have untreated pine (price for linear meter):

M&B Sales YES (90x35, $2.83 even cheaper if you buy more, other sizes but no 90x45) I bought my pine from here!

Cullity Timbers[Laminex group, Balcatta] YES ($5, last batch, some other sizes)
Timberbloke YES (some sizes, looks expensive)
Home Timber & Hardware YES ($5.95)
Mandurah Timber Supplies YES ($12? expensive but very helpful)
Cullity Timbers[Bibra Lake] YES (some sizes, not 90x45)

Places that do not have any untreated pine:

    Boral Timber NO
    Colli NO (very helpful)
    Perth Timber Co NO
    Midland Timber NO
    Independent Timber Supplies NO
    WA Timber Sales NO
    Franz Building Supplies NO
    Auswest Timbers NO
Austim NO (only large amounts like whole pack)

Places that did not answer me (quite far away anyway):

    Carabooda Timber
    Wespine
