Peruvian Walnut
Hi all,
Could anybody tell me where I could buy boards of Peruvian Walnut of the following size 2mx250-300mmx25mm in the Melbourne Metro area? I have drained the larger widths from AFT and need one more larger size board to maintain authenticity in a Shaker Chest of Drawers.
Thanks in advance,
Rob

Rob,
Have you tried Mathews at Vermont? keep us posted on how you go, I'm after some to replace some doors on a set of wall units I built years ago when I knew even less than I do now. (2/10th of SFA). Last time I had a phone around was unable to get anything suitable.
John.

Hi John,
I haven't tried Matthews, but I'm fairly sure they dont have any. ( I spend a bit of time there )
AFT have boards up to 200mmx25mm and lengths to about 2.5metres. They also have some boards at 220mm x 38 also about 2metres. You need to pick through them as some have cracks in the ends, but the guys are very helpful. Its a great timber to work with. If those sizes will work for you, I'd go to AFT. ( You can even mention my name. Sad isn't it ).

Rob

Quanta Costa. . ?
Hi all
Peruvian Walnut. . .
Sounds real nice.
How much is a linear metre of that board (they have left) at AFT?
I'm a bit shocked at the price of timber having recently tried to but some Tas Blackwood. . .
Cheers
Jedo

Hi Jedo,
About $25.00/lm as 25mm depth, widths to 200mm.
Its a great timber to work with. Saws, planes, routs, sands and finishes well. Finish can be quite glossy without being plastic if you wish. I did a quick run through on a piece yesterday, using 10min max of Scandinavian oil, then friction seal at 6,8,1500 and 2000grit. Finally used EEE Ultrashine and Trad wax.I'd show you, but when I went back to AFT this AM, I left it with them. They thought the finish looked better than what they've got on the wall.
I have attached a picture of a side panel for the chest to give you an idea of what it looks like after planing/thicknessing and edge trimming.
Regards,
Rob

Rob,
Thanks for the info on your supplier. Your quite right it is easy stuff to work, very forgiving and there seems to be little movement. The couple of things I made, the wall units and a small chest came up well with French polish. Perhaps I should go back and hit them with EEE and Trad Wax to really give the timber a lift.
John.

Hi John,
I really do appreciate your comments. Spending the time on finishing is a very rewarding, if time consuming job. With the Trad wax on top, you feel you're actually looking down through the grain, its that clear and its really smooth and warm to the touch.
Thanks again.

Hi all,
Thought you'd like to see how the Peruvian Walnut is progressing. Attached are three shots of parts of the chest of drawers. First two are of one side panel, sanded to 320g as OS, then 400g as ROS. Its only coated in turps at this stage, redy for oiling. I just love the colour and grain.
The third is a rail with a streak of blue, which occurs reasonably often. The photo doesn't do it justice though. Its actually a duck egg blue with some irridescence.
The two boards were jointed using a Festool TS75 Plunge saw and thats all.
I like this timber!
Regards
Rob

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to say that AFT is the only place I can find Peruvian Walnut in Melbourne. They have about +/- 150lm of 25mm depth in various widths, and maybe doudle that in 38mm depth. After talking to Ian at Mathews this AM, who sold out some time ago, I doubt there will be anymore incoming. The AFT stuff has been here a while and is very flat and well seasoned. If you need any for a project, it might be worth getting it now, even if you don't plan on using it for a while.
Just thought you'd like to know.
Regards,
Rob
