    Default Petrified wood - Value?

    Hi All;

    My little Ol' Lady friend next door has a piece of petrified wood. It is 14" long, 5" to 8" in diameter, and a circumference of 21".

    She offered it to me saying "this is really hard wood!". Chuckle, chuckle..

    It turns out that she really would like to get rid of it. I wondered if it was worth anything.

    She living pretty close to the bone and could use a bit of unexpected cash.

    Does anyone know if it's worth anything, like how much, and where could she sell it?

    Thanks, Norm

    She'd probably get a more accurate appraisal if she took it into a lapidary/gemology supply.

    Even if 'tis not jewellery grade, they should be able to give an approx. specimen value.

    Probably not worth a huge amount - petrified wood is pretty common. So it would come down to how to value-add to it.

    Selling it to someone in a rockhounds or sim will get a basic price, especially as it sounds as if it is uncut, and therefore of unknown quality, colour etc.

    If it were cut, then it would either prove to be worth next to nothing, or worth at a guess $100 or 2? given its size. Then the purchaser would be able to evaluate how to best use it - thin slicing for translucent effects, shaped and polished for some interesting jewellry, shaped as ornaments (egg shapes are quite popular), or left as is as a bit of a talking point (but not worth pusuing further).

    And don't forget you need the appropriate tools, at the least a diamond saw & grinding wheels. (And all the appropriate dopping gear, rouges, etc.)

    Mind you, good lapidary grinders make a top o' the line Tormek look like a Model T Ford...

    Nowt to do with this piece of ancient tree, but.... my dad was the bloke who was the construction engineer for the first giant dragline at Blackwater (open cut coal).

    When he first went to Blackwater, before the hole was opened up, he said that there were huge areas of petrified forest just laying on the ground - whole trees that looked like they had just been blown over and left to petrify, but in segments about 3 or 4 feet long. Of course they had been buried for million of years and had only been uncovered by erosion.. but - he was canny enough to collect a few 'logs' - heavy as hell.

    The construction site offices had thumping great stumps of petrified wood, all about 3 feet long, standing on end to delineate the carpark! Beautiful lumps of stone, with the rings all clearly visible,, just stunning.

    I think there are different sorts of petrified wood, opalised glass like specimens that polish up well are probably worth something but the dull chalky types are interesting but as Stuart has said fairly common.
