Default What would you do with this piece of timber ??

Some of you may know I organised a shipment of Ancient and Swamp Kauri from NZ

I know most folks here have a lust for timber and me particularly timber that is eco sustainable in some way and exotic and rare, and sounds good because I make music instruments, Kauri is all this and it lends itself to many crafts from spoons to boats and violins and flutes to name only just a few.

I thought I'd open an opportunity and challenge to all folks on this great forum, to add to the great spirit already among us all.

Take a look at this piece of figured Swamp Kauri it's 15,000 or under old and measures 460 x 500 x 800 mm

If you can tell me in around 400 to 500 words firstly what you would do with this piece of wood if you win and secondly what makes you passionate about useing eco sustainable woods by the end of the month it could be yours. This is a dam nice piec of sound high figured swamp Kauri and certainly no cast away piece of timber at all !!!

    The only conditions are:

    1. you must complete the project within 2 months of getting the wood and report.
    2. Must pay for postage if not local to NNSW or Brissy where I can deliver.
    3. post pics of all the finished works to this post and stay as true to your vision as possible.
    4. all entries to this challenge must be posted here for easy reference by all members, no PM.

This is exciting.....If the winner decides to gift the work/s to some charity cause then I will offer more timber challenges.....(No expectation that you must give to charity, you could keep it or gift it to anyone whatever turns you on)

Love will make the world a greater place

    Matt

That is one damn nice stick of timber you have there Matt. Is it 80 mm thick or .8 veneer? I will assume that it is 80mm thick.

For me, I think it would be a bit of a shame to use it in solid. I would be inclined to resaw into thick veneers, maybe 2 mm, and make a couple of spectacular but quite busy cabinets from it.

Maybe some more thought is required. Hmmmmmmmm!!

    Cheers

Have to agree with Bevan in that it would be a shame not to be able to see more of that beautiful grain. I too would resaw into thick veneers and go from there.

It would make a spectacular platter about 400 - 420 round and any offcuts offered to the penturners.

We really do need a drool smilie!

I'm with you,it would make a nice platter.Saw a swamp kauri platter a few years ago at the Qld woodturners exhibition(brisbane),the colour of it was silver/grey,and was sporting some attractive fiddleback.By memory it won first prize!

    I would like that Matt.

Having given a bit more thought to that lovely bit of stick, I am reckoning that a nice Krenov style collectors cabinet might be nice. Curved sides and coopered doors. Knife hinges, stainless shop made hardware and a figured walnut stand with through wedged tenons. Wedges from the Kauri. I reckon the contrasts would lift both the cabinet and the stand.

You have got me going now. I might have to go to the drawing board.

    Cheers

great concept, you are to be congratulated.
If I had any chance to get near the workbench in the forseeable future, I'd suggest a cabinet... but I'm not making anything for months
