Larger pics confirm my initial thoughts. Indoor flooring is engineered plywood Oak, can't decide if it's American or European, balustrade is Vic Ash.

Re the Karri flooring pictured - never forget, that Australian Termites will walk over hot coals to get to it. They will build termite trails like railway tunnels to get over concrete, steel and other tough, termite-resistant timbers, to reach Karri.

Interestingly, and a little off-topic - but I recently found out that all the initial supply of sleepers for the Trans-Australian Railway (laid between 1913 to 1917), was Karri sleepers!
I was rather stunned to find this out, and couldn't figure out why - until I read further, and found that all the Karri sleepers on the Trans-Line were treated, by a process known as Powellising.

Powellising was essentially a process of boiling the timber in a solution of water, molasses and arsenic for several hours, until the solution permeated a reasonable depth into the timber.
The initial batch of Trans-Line sleepers lasted nearly 25 years, and the Railways Management didn't commence a sleeper renewal program until around 1938.

Jarrah and Wandoo was obviously too expensive, or in short supply, for the sleepers for the Trans-Australian Railway, and it appears someone suggested the Powellised Karri as a suitable replacement.

Thats what the builders decided on for his deck.
My DBF just wanted to match it.

Can they climb up walls? - Yes
And up powder coated hand rails? - Yes
Or maybe they can fly? - Yes

From Bunnings Termite Shield description ...

"Inserted between the lower floor framing timber and the supporting stumps, Termite Shields form a physical barrier to termites or white ants. The mud tunnels that they build to travel over the Termite Shield provide visible evidence of their activity."

Thus, the termite shields don't stop termites - they only show you evidence, that they are active in your building.

Karri is a very tough, stringy, and strong timber - but I would never use it where there is a chance termite activity could be missed.

I can recall many years ago, pulling weathered old Karri facia boards (under the guttering) off my house and replacing them with jarrah.
I carelessly threw the old Karri facia boards in a pile against a side fence, where there was heavy vine coverage, plenty of moisture and a fair degree of low light.
I went to pick them up many months later and was stunned to find they were little more than termite dust. This was ancient, weathered Karri, split and totally dried out - and still the termites went out of their way to eat it.

There is no utterly foolproof methods of stopping termites, they are determined little buggers. I have a perimeter ring of termite bait stations that I use to keep a check on their activity.

Two thing that are quite important in termite control is to keep soil moisture levels down, and not grow plants right up against any part of your buildings.
Termites need moisture to survive and they can't go more than 24 hrs without accessing moisture. Watering plants excessively gives them moisture they need - and plants right up against buildings gives them both food and water.

Which provides best termite protection - termite baits or liquid soil treatments? - Termite Specialist

Another thing is, to not kill off all your little black ants. Keep some black ant nests around, they kill and eat termites and the termite eggs. You just need to control the black ant numbers so they aren't running rampant.
