Possum Spoilt Timber
Hello,
Under what used to be my grandfather’s house are some beautiful pieces of old timber. Posums however have used them as a home and have left their mess on these. This mess has soaked in over time. Is this timber be salvageable? Should I just make a really nice chicken shed out of it?
Thanks,
Edge

Possum does stain but is highly concentrated so you might find that it has dried quickly and only stained stained the timber surface layers. Would be worth doing a few exploratory scraping or chisel digs to see how far it has penetrated. I can at least verify that it does wash off very readily though in water because I had to do clean off the benchtops on my workbench which had sat in a shed that housed possums for several years. They were coated with polyurethane though.

Thanks. That makes sense. I'll give it a go.

Howdy edge, Salvaged a pile of silky oak and hoop pine a few years
back, it had been stored for over 30 yrs and was black from possums
. Put it all through the thicknesser and only had to take of 2 - 3mm
per face. So depending on the quality of the timber in the first place,
it could be destined for far better than a chook shed
Cheers Mick
