Purpleheart (Peltogyne sp.)
No sure if the moderators allow link to FB or other forums, but I found this pic of a purpleheart log freshly cut very striking.
The axes they use are also interesting to me.

I have some pics I took in NZ of Purpleheart & Greenheart that were AMAZING if forum members are interested.
They DO import it & in VERY large dimensions! For what you may ask? For exterior use & CONSTRUCTION!! What grade? "select grade". They mill & dry it in NZ.

IMPORTED WOOD at Port Whangarei, Northland, New Zealand
Taken during a visit to a large wood importer & supplier, part IWCS meeting in Northland North Island of NZ in 2018.
Here is some Purpleheart wood as imported in large flitches (?). They are 200 x 200 mm before being re-sawn and kiln dried and select grade.
But I could swear there were bigger as well over 300 x 300 mm they looked like 400 mm square.
All from Surinam I think and all with a proper forestry stamp.

Above a close up of square ... how many pepper mills in that I thought?

Here’s one I milled back in ‘13, think I still have a bit the owner let me keep, I’ll have a look when I’m back home tomorrow or Monday.

Sorry, I was referring to the Purpleheart referred to in the FB link, I assume you were talking about this one
Never saw the leaves or the tree before I milled it, pretty sure it was Aromatic Eastern Red CedarCheers

I was going to say the one in the link wasn't Purpleheart, well not the Sth American one anyway, looked like the aromatic cedar. Purpleheart is brown when worked, and turns purple with oxidation/sunlight, but also returns to brown again in time.
I remember quite a few years ago the Mitre10 in Heidelberg VIC brought in ~5 cube of Purpleheart fencing. Yes palings, stringers and posts. The word spread in the forum and it was all sold in 2 days for fencing prices, the hardware did not know what they had, and sold it super cheap thinking no-one wanted a purple fence. Imagine 2.4m 90x90 posts for $10 . Even the palings 19mm x 150mm x 1.8 for $1 made heaps of pen blanks and boxes . No I missed out, my mother didn't get around there fast enough for me, even though she was only 2km awayNeil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Yes mate the purpleheart pic of the cut log in the link is what I took the link of. I assume it went straight to the pic from that address for others too*. Sorry.
Aromatic Eastern Red cedar is what your slab sure looks like - a pretty & aromatic softwood from US but ocassionally seen here as a ornamental grown in gardens. Nice experience milling it I bet.
Cheers, Euge
* PS: when I click on the link it goes straight to the purpleheart log. No matter.Last edited by Euge; 23rd March 2019 at 12:15 PM. Reason: to make an addition & PS

No need to wait, I planed the previous planed surface about 4 years ago, so you can see new and old surface in this pic.
New is left and old is right
