Default Question - Coachwood - colour changes - time, stains, oils??

    Hey all,

As always I am seeking some opinions/advice.

I have two piece of coachwood, both of which are 1/4 cut and without heart or visible sapwood.
Old, air dried and hopefully stable.

The colour difference is very noticable, one piece is a salmon colour, whereas theother is more light brown.

Does anyone know if my lighter piece will darken into a browner colour over time and with exposure to sun (or the other way round), or will I need to plan to color match with stains?
The planned finish is to french polish.

I know that it is a 'minor' question, but it is for a big job, and will greatly affect the amount of waste and stock I can get out of the boards if I can combine timber from both pieces in the jobs I have planned.
(btw, its taken 4 years to get the two pieces of the grain and size I need, so running out and getting different pieces is not really an option, neither is using the different colour as a 'feature'. )

    As always, assistance greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Clinton

    Thumbs up

Can't help you on the colour business Clinton but I envy the fact that you
have some beautiful timber to work with!!!

Hope it has retained that wonderful odor.!!

Thanks mate, I'm sure it will smell nice when cut, but its got a few years (decades?) of grime on it at the moment.

It took a long time to get the stuff I wanted, so I hope it changes colour on sun exposure.
    Cheers,
    Clinton

Clinton not know how the wood was stored it maybe just sun bleaching on the lighter piece.

Sue had a Coachwood spinning wheel which when sitting near a window one one side became lighter coloured years latter prior selling it a coat of Cedar oil was all it took to darken it up not perfect match all round but darn close.

Salmon pink and light brown are the two natural colors in coachwood. Trees growing side by side can produce one or the other. I think you will have to stain to produce uniformity.

    Thanks wheelin' and rusty.

I was hoping to avoid colour matching, as I find it too easy to end up chasing my tail. Oh well.
    Cheers,

    Default coachwood inch boards

Still plenty of inch boards to widths 150-200 wide and 3 metres long.
Pete took the rest of the 40mm boards. 20 years dry and brown, no salmon here that I have noted
