Default Raspberry, one way or another

Trash or treasure? I was smashing an old pallet to put it in the rubbish bin, when I smelled a faint but unmistakeable raspberry smell. Strange, I thought, so I came here and searched "rasperry smelling timber" to find, of course, Raspberry Jam.
Extraction of the said timber from the rubbish bin and planing of a piece ensued. It actually looks like the pictures. The colour of the heartwood varies from pinkish brown to purplish in the different pieces.

One odd slat works out to be Karri, which confirms the WA origin. So far so good.

The problem is that the density is not 1.04. It varies from piece to piece, but they float. And after the serendipitous cut, no further smell of raspberry.

Question: Have I stumbled on unusually light (1.04 is fairly close to 1 anyway) old dry timber that has lost its characteristic smell or my investigative work is flawed? How can I tell?

    Thumbs up

Totally wrong grain for Raspberry Jam Frank.

Might have come from a pallet of raspberry cordial bottles that sprang a leak!

Yeah, that could be an explanation! However, if I had come across this bit before (I did not select it for the photo because of no visible sapwood) I would not have doubted my guess: it sinks. This is one of the darkest bits. Still wrong grain? The blade of the buzzer I used was terrible, that does not help. Any better guesses?

    Arrow

Grain still looks wrong. Don't like the colour either.

I only have a pen blank left of some Jam and I'm in no hurry to slice it up to test my memory!

I use it for demonstration purpose.. I sand it to let people sniff the breeze. It smells the same every time.

OK, thanks Artme. Turned out to be a raspberry of the vulgar species, then...
