Recycled hardwood fence posts
Hi all,
I pull down fences all day, and go through about 20 or 30 posts a week, most of these are in great condition, 2 inch thick and 5 inch wide, 20-30 years seasoned. usually less then a metre long.
my question is, has anybody got any good projects or ideas to use these for, instead of giving them away for firewood?Sydney fencing decking and gates ideas and kits at:

It does not use up much wood but I have made a couple of mallets out of my old posts...

I was just thinking today about making some legs for a bench seat, and how useful some short bits of hardwood fence post would be, but I'm in Brisbane.
Cheers, Richard

I used some of the fence rails for the frame for one table;
then some heavy posts for the frame with 6x2 as the top of another.
I've seen the pailings used for picture frames, too.
Other than that, it makes great fire wood.
Cheers, crowie

Great chairs, Al
Hi Al,
Great to see you recycle timber that would have found its way into landfill into something that is useful and also looks great. Nice one!

I have a dining table hall table and entertainment unit all made of old fence posts and pailings. Not made by me so I cant take the credit.
Even short offcuts of fence posts are good for turning so here is a mortar and pestle I did a couple of years ago.
I now regret making firewood of lots of old fence wood over the years.
Regards
John

Old Fence Posts
A few years ago in a gallery in Manjimup in WA I saw old jarrah fence posts cut down to table lamp lenghts and re-cycled to that use. Only the tops and bottoms of the sections had been turned to better set off the natural weathered look of the posts themselves. Some still had a section of wire through the holes. Looked great! I haven't made any cause I don't like to copy the work of others too much.
It's hard to turn effectively with ones hands in ones pockets but that's how I'd feel about turning a section with protruding barbed wire in it!
Cheers Old Pete

I made a blanket box from recycled red gum fence posts and posted the result on here in Aug 2009.
If you do a search using "recent project' and my user name it should come upTom
