Default Red Tingle & Yellow Tingle

    Hello fellow wood workers,
I'm from WA but am having great difficulty finding any Red or Yellow Tingle which are species unique to our State, the Red from the Walpole area and Yellow from the Albany Region. It is my intention to make my children end grain cutting boards using only timber unique to our State. I have 18 different species at the moment, but these two are what I need to get the project started. Minimum sizes required are 500mm long X 50mm X 50mm. Any assistance particularly from WA members who might have a piece sitting around amongst your stash of timber would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you in anticipation

    Peter Warren

    Hello MAte
Despite the vast quantities of stunning WA timbers, alas, I do not own any Tingle, perhaps give Derek Doak, the Timber Bloke a ring (google that)

Yeah another recommendation for The Timber Bloke, if any retailers have it it will be him. See him at the WA Forest Products auctions from time to time and they often sell rare WA timbers.

I have some small pieces and thin boards but nothing near the size you are looking at. I'm not that impressed with the pieces I have as the grain is open and the wood is a lot more friable than say Jarrah or Karri. I suspect the pieces I have may have come from close to the heartwood which is known to be quite porous and is why if fire has access to the heart wood the lower heart of the tree is easily burned and it's only the large buttresses that keep the older trees standing

According to the Forest Products Commission it has not been milled commercially for years and what's left is tied up in parks and reserves.

Unless you can find a private supplier you may have to find a private landowner in the Walpole-Denmark region who is clearing land and has a log or two that they are willing to have milled. Some friends of ours in Denmark recently built a house and used 16 small whole Tingle logs as the veranda poles for the house and another 16 half length logs as balusters. I believe these were sourced from a private landowner at considerable expense.

Another idea might be to contact Albany and Denmark wood turners clubs

    Default tingle replies.

Thank you to those who responded to my request for Tingle, Derek from Bibra Lake is where I've sourced most of my hard to get WA timbers, great bloke too. Again thanks for the ideas etc
