River Red Gum
Hi guys,
I'm using this piece of wood to make a nice "dispatch box" for my local debating club, and I believe (as I always have that) it is a River Red Gum, however recently an experienced woodworker has suggested it might be Red Cedar.

One thing which is impossible to translate in the attached pic above is the smell; as you can see it has been sanded and is very smooth and soft, but the sanding has brought out the most amazing smell. It's really quite a special smell.
Can anyone confirm that it's a River Red Gum?
Cheers,
Dan Moszkowicz

From the pic and your mention of the smell, I'd say the advice you were given is correct. It isn't River Red Gum.

Hey Skew, am I correct to understand that you believe it to be Red Cedar?

From what I can see, yes it appears to be a Red Cedar.
I won't say it's a definite yes as it's notoriously difficult to precisely ID timber even when you have it in your hand, let alone from pictures alone. There are also other timbers that would appear similar, however Cedar has a distinctive, quite pleasant smell.
I do think it's definitely not River Redgum though.

Reckon Skew is dead right about it being ARC. Crazy simple to determine the difference between Red Gum and Cedar - RG is about as dense as water (specific gravity around 1), and ARC is about half that. So if it's crazy light and crazy soft it coitanly ain't Red Gum.

Not River Red Gum, and going by the smell, highly likely to be Red Cedar.

I agree Skew mate, so thanks for taking the time to impart your knowledge, it is noteworthy that your opinion is consistent with the gentleman who initially advised about it as he is quite an experienced hand at woodworking. I'll post some pics of his work if I get the opportunity.

Thanks Mapleman and cava, the consensus is definite, and I appreciate your input. Hope to post some pics of it once finished.
