Rosewood appears to be bleeding gum
About 9 months ago I obtained some rosewood from Mal. I have now started to use it and have found one plank with a gum substance flecked all over one surface. Is this a normal occurance with rosewood. A bit of work with a block plane reveals that it is only on the surface. All other planks are fine.

oil
Rosewood is soemtimes oily and finishing needs to take this into account.
Boards will sometimes 'bleed' a few spots of oil. typical rosewood, but it still is one of the best timbers!

Thanks Greg. Hope that it does not reoccur once it has been cleaned up. Looks as though someone has just stood back 2 paces and flicked a wet brush at the full length of the board - makes the timber look deep red on the affected areas. But gummy to touch. As mentioned. all the other boards are fine as is the other side of this one.

Thanks MP. Haven't seen you on here for ages, or just don't see where you lurk.

I made some small turned lidded boxes from NSW Rosewood that had been sawn over 20 years. Very dry and no problems with the finish but a few months later there was globs of thich sticky resin inside each box. Washed off with metho but made a mess. Phil.
