    Default Seasoning Blackwood

    All,

I had the task of cutting down a dead Blackwood Wattle yesterday up in the Dandenong Ranges, yielding about 50 feet of trunk between 6" and 10" diameter. Most is straight and sound, with the usual rot near the base. It is obviously dry as some of the split pieces were in my fire last night, but cannot have been dead much more than a year or two.

Q: how do I season this stuff so that it is useful for turning etc? I have a number of 12" long pieces and three lengths of about 10 feet left undamaged.

    BR,

    Fraser

Paint all the end grain and about 3 inches along the sides with log seal/mobilcer M, or old house paint, or search the forum for other formulas to use.

If you want you can split/cut it down the centre first into 2 half rounds before you seal the ends. Then it is a matter of waiting a couple of years for it to dry, If you dont cut it you can later follow a crack to get the 1/2 round logs.

    Hope that helps

    Cheers
    regards

    David

I'd also remove the bark and spray with boron as the borers love the sapwood.

Is spraying with boron effective? Someone told me you have to soak the timber in it for 2 weeks, which would be a pain in the ####! Well that was for silky oak anyway.
