seeking reasonably priced veneers
Hi,
I would like to construct some wooden drumshells using build up of veneer layers. I would like to use ash or possibly maple for the inner plies and maybe burl for the outer face. My problem is I only seem to be able to find veneers for around $50 per square meter. I don't mind paying around that much for the outer attractive layer, but couldn't afford to pay that much for the crossbanding structural layers.
Does anyone know of a supplier of reasonably priced structural cross banding, the thinner the better, in Melbourne?

For lower priced veneers, you need to find someone with a bandsaw that can resaw some "lesser" wood for the internal layers. Commercial veneer tens, by its very nature, to be "show" stock so is more expensive.
Most hobby shops have only 14" or so bandsaws (as I do), so are limited to a resaw height of around 150mm. If you need wider stock, then you'll likely have to go on the plead to a joinery shop.
Cheers!

Have you tried here http://www.brims.com.au/contact.htm they are in Scoresby, near Knox.
How are you going to press up the layers? Vacuum bag?I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.

Andrew, pop into George Fethers in Port Melb, they have a rack as you go in full of scrap and shorts etc. Cheap and you can get some gems

It's also worthwhile looking at iVeneers on ebay. His has a good rep, and the prices look good.

For the record, I do not have any association with him.Chris
