Silky Beech = Soapy box = Citronella Moorei
I would be interested to know if anyone has used silky beech for cabinet work carving or anything else. I am about to cut up a log and would like to cut sizes that match a popular end use. It is also known as soapy box (because it foams up if water is used during sawing) and its other name is citronella moorei.
cheers

Bit awkward replying to your own thread.........but in the interest of providing useful information here goes. Pictured below is a piece of the log. Note the course bark and the clover leaf pattern of the trunk. this makes it more difficult to get good recovery. I cut the log into sizes suitable for cabinet making. It has nice radial grain similar to that in silky oak but less pronounced (less contrast in the flecks). Unforturnately I procrastinated a little too long and can therefore attest that Citronella moorei is prone to pin hole borers, lictus borers and rot.

Citronella M
Hi Steve,
Its a good wood, but, as you said, It doesnt stand well.
Interior use only.
Used to be called NSW Maple (Villaresia Moorei, Baker page 56)
The Powerhouse Museum in Sydney has a display cupboard in this.
I am currently looking at an early colonial kitchen dresser (1820's) which is probably the same wood. Wouldn't mind a lump for research/comparison, if you have any left.
