Silverwood?
Hello All,
I'm a bit of an amateur traditional archer and I came across a reference to "Australian Silverwood" arrow shafts today.
This bloke in the states raves about them http://www.oldbow.com/silverwood_tapered_shafts.htm but I have never heard of them before.
Does anyone know what Australian Silverwood is, and where I can get some?
Thanks,

Dabbled a bit in archery myself a few years back .Port Orford cedar was the go for wooden shafts then but the good stuff was getting harder to source .
I am betting the stuff named as 'Silverwood' is Silver ash and would not mind betting 'Silverwood ' is generic term .Why not email the bloke and put it to him ? Ask him straight out , where he got the name ' Silverwood ' and ask for the scientific description . Which begs the question ' Why change the name of a known Australian species ?'
Course , it could be ,that it is a common or local name for one of our species that I have not heard .
regards

It's a cut & paste from here....

I think you will find that Silverwood is a memory slip by some body who didn't write down what they thought they heard.Cliff.

I believe it is plain old Mountain Ash.
Ignore the 'silver' bit, that's just marketing talk.

Don't think its ash as the "silverwood" is much finer grained than Ramin and there isn't much difference between grain tightness in ash and ramin.

Acutally, Bob, if you compare the stuff in the photos with mtn ash dowel then the 'silverwood' is coarser then mountain ash, not finer. In 'mtn ash' I also include Tassie oak and those several related Sthrn eucalypts. I think its annoying the way these marketing types talk such rubbish about timber. As an ex-archer I would be pretty happy with mtn ash arrow shafts, in fact I think I have some and will pull them out in the daylight tomorrow.

Ramin timber has since August 2001 been listed under Appendix III of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna & Flora (CITES)
