Where do I source large timbers?
Hi all,
I'm living in Melbourne and am in need of some 10by4(250by100) timber for a sculpture. Preferably a hardwood that looks yellowish, like oak or ash for example. And i don't want Oregon!
The problem really is the size, I usually deal with Australian Furniture Timbers, but in this size they only have a couple options. Should i chose to laminate two layers of 10by2 I have every option in the world, but i don't particularly want to laminate.
Could someone point me in the right direction please...
Regards,
Lewis Allen.

If you get desperate then we can mill and ship it from up here. Freight would be a pain though

more info, sorry
It will need to be dry. I'm making a rather large, potentially dangerous construction with it so the more stable the better really.
I'll be needing, all up, about 14m of it. but it will be cut into 600mm lengths, so timber length isn't really an issue.
Purchasing it ready would be easier for me but if i do need to get something milled and kiln dried, what is the turn around time for something like that? i'm in no desperate hurry.

For a start, you won't find anything in that size that is milled and kiln dried, it just isn't done as it isn't cost feasible for any sawmillers.
Your best bet will be to search for recycled timber.
I would start with Timbersearch as they do specialise in the bigger stuff, but be prepared to pay a premium for itCheers

What sort of timber are we looking at? i don't want a red wood. sorry for being picky but although i need only 600mm lengths i need them to be without bolt holes or similar imperfections. If i can get recycled timber when once dressed will near on resemble new timber then i'm all for it, but seeing as it is for a sculpture i want to be perceived in a certain way, i must be particular(i'm studying fine art, sculpture major, so every tiny detail is questioned)
But if the bridge timber fits the bill then ok. Twenty(20) 600mm lengths is what i'm after

The Timber.
Hi Lewis,
For Starters, it is nice to meet another Lewis.
Here just out of Geelong, on the Portarlington Road, there is a Co. called
" Timber Zoo ". It also has Recycled Timbers.
Have never been there, as I have no need too, as I only Turn small Stuff.
They maybe able to help. Probably try a Google.
Regards,
issatree.

I am cutting up a big log this weekend and I can get it kiln dried nearby. It is one of the local eucalypt/ Ash species with minimal resin pockets, If you are interested PM me. I am only about an hour and a half from melbourne and you should be able to stick that much on a ute or in a trailer. let me know ASAP if you are interested as I probably will not cut that size otherwise. not sure on the kiln time but turn around should be fairly quick.
